Mercedes-AMG GT – what kind of car is this exactly

Mercedes-AMG GT is a name that makes most people picture a low two-seat sports car. The 2020 Mercedes-AMG GT 43 Turbo 4Matic+ in our range is a far more practical machine, though: five doors, five seats, matt black paint and all-wheel drive, with a 3.0-litre turbocharged engine producing 270 kW under the bonnet. Power reaches the wheels through an automatic gearbox, and the fuel type is listed as hybrid (petrol / electric).

Technically, the four-door model of this generation is a close relative of the E-Class. According to the sources, it shares its wheelbase with the E-Class estate, and the whole model family is characterised by all-wheel drive, a turbocharged engine and a nine-speed automatic. On the base models of this period, the electrical side was limited to a 48-volt mild hybrid system; plug-in versions only joined the family later. The body also got its own suspension tuning and a reinforced chassis, and rear-wheel steering is mentioned as well – which is what sets this car apart from an ordinary sports saloon.

Who the Mercedes-AMG GT suits

This is not a light, spartan sports car but rather a fast and comfortable everyday car with a genuinely usable rear bench and a big boot opening. Motoring journalists have highlighted exactly that combination in this generation: track-capable handling together with comfort that is bearable in city traffic, plus space for four. At the same time, it has been noted that the car's mass makes itself felt in tight corners, and that the front end tends to run wide under hard braking. Anyone after a pure, lightweight sports car should look elsewhere; anyone who wants one car to cover both family duties and driving for its own sake is in the right place.

The practical side is well covered on this particular car: sports seats with electric adjustment and memory, heated seats, a heated sports steering wheel, a digital instrument panel, climate control, a 360-degree parking camera with front and rear sensors, an electrically operated tailgate and folding rear seat backs. The Burmester sound system with amplifier, subwoofer and surround speakers turns a long drive into something close to a concert, and alongside Apple CarPlay and Android Auto there is wireless phone charging.

How it behaves in Estonian conditions

All-wheel drive is standard across this model family and it gives a reassuring feel in March slush and November rain. The manufacturer nevertheless stresses that the car only works well in snow with proper winter tyres – our car has winter tyres (non-studded) on AMG alloy wheels. Experience shared on owners' forums suggests that narrower tyre sizes work better in winter than very wide ones: wide rubber and deep slush are not a good combination.

In daily use on dark Estonian mornings, the LED lighting with high-beam assist, the rain sensor, the heated and folding mirrors and keyless entry and start all help. On the driver assistance side there is blind spot warning, lane keeping and lane change assist, a collision prevention braking system, traffic sign recognition and driver drowsiness detection.

What to check before buying

Cars like this are often driven hard, which means the history matters more than the appearance. With a used AMG, it is worth going through at least the following.

  • Full service history, and that the paperwork matches the actual service intervals – only buy a car with a complete history.
  • Open recall campaigns by VIN. Known topics include the earth connection of the 48-volt system, and on 2019–2022 cars the routing of the gearbox wiring, which can lead to corroded connectors.
  • The condition of the 48-volt mild hybrid system. Forums describe starter-generator and sensor failures that can cause starting problems or loss of power – uncertain but worth checking, because work on such a system calls for dealer-level tools and programming.
  • Brake wear. A livelier driving style wears brakes quickly, and this is a recurring theme in used-car reviews too.
  • Infotainment reliability – screen and software glitches have been mentioned, so click through every function on the test drive.

The same list applies if you plan to use the car as a company representation vehicle: running costs in this class are higher than on an ordinary saloon, and some sources recommend shorter than usual oil and fluid change intervals.
