Mercedes-Benz G 63 AMG: What to Know Before You Buy
The Mercedes-Benz G is one of the few cars whose silhouette needs no explanation - the boxy body, the external door handles and the turn signals standing proud on the bonnet have survived for decades. Ours, here in Tallinn, is a 2025 G 63 AMG Performance Manufaktur: a 4.0-litre petrol engine, 430 kW, automatic gearbox, all-wheel drive, five doors and five seats, finished in a yellow Manufaktur paint. This article is here to help you work out who a car like this actually suits, and what to look at before you decide.
Mercedes-Benz G: the new generation and what changed
The fourth development stage, introduced in 2024, carries the code W465 and is in essence a very thorough update of the previous generation - the manufacturer itself calls it the model's most extensive refresh. The cars are still built in Graz, Austria, at the Magna Steyr plant. The generation brings 48 V mild-hybrid technology, updated MBUX software and a new front camera that provides a so-called transparent bonnet view off road. The model range includes six-cylinder and V8 engines, as well as a diesel variant and a fully electric version - our car has the AMG eight-cylinder petrol engine.
The classics are still there: permanent all-wheel drive and three differential locks. Testers and owners have singled out the new generation's quieter cabin, lower wind noise and calmer, less wallowing behaviour than before. The driver assistance systems have also taken a big step forward - adaptive cruise control and the lane assistance systems have drawn particular praise. Instead of a rotary controller, the systems are operated from the screens, which makes the ergonomics noticeably more logical.
Who this car suits
The Mercedes-Benz G is not a rational choice and does not pretend to be one. It suits a buyer who wants both the image and genuine off-road ability at the same time: forest tracks, building sites, boat ramps and gravel roads in winter are no problem for it. The AMG version adds a muscular petrol engine, a 9-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT sports transmission and a switchable AMG Performance exhaust system.
The model's weaker points are just as well known: fuel consumption is modest for the class, the boot is surprisingly small for such a square body, and the suspension is firmer than on road-biased SUVs at the same money. Rear legroom is on the tight side if tall people are sitting up front. If the car's main job were to cover long motorway distances every day, there are cheaper answers - for example from the Autosky Rent full-service rental range, where, depending on the package, the monthly payment also covers insurance and servicing.
Equipment and everyday comfort
This particular car has a long equipment list, aimed at both comfort and winter:
- Webasto engine and cabin pre-heater, plus an electrically heated windscreen
- heated steering wheel, four heated seats, ventilated front seats and a massage function for driver and front passenger
- 3-zone climate control, Manufaktur leather interior, Alcantara headlining and wood trim
- Burmester 4D Surround sound system, digital instrument panel, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
- 360-degree camera system, front and rear parking sensors, automatic parking function
- blind spot warning, lane keeping and lane change assistance, collision prevention braking
- electronically adjustable air suspension, front and rear differential locks, hill descent control, retarder
- 22-inch AMG alloy wheels, AMG Night package, detachable towbar and a glass sunroof
The off-road cockpit and the 180-degree front view are the details that separate the G-Class from an ordinary luxury SUV - they are meant to be used, not just listed in a brochure.
Estonian roads and winter
In winter conditions the new generation has had good feedback: all-wheel drive and weight give a sure-footed feel in snow. Still, the manufacturer's own advice applies - proper winter tyres give the best result, and the differential locks are an off-road aid whose use on tarmac is limited and whose engagement may switch off some safety systems. You will not need them for everyday city driving.
The large 22-inch wheels mean low-profile tyres, which call for attention on Estonian potholes in spring. The Webasto pre-heater is a plus: on a frosty morning it is a real convenience in a car with a big petrol engine. Reliable information on how this generation behaves in very cold weather - cold starts, heating, the 48 V system - is thin on the ground, so here it is worth relying on your own experience and a conversation with the seller.
What to check before buying
This model generation has had a few recall campaigns, among them ESP control unit software and a fault in the front short-range radar that risks losing automatic braking, lane keeping and adaptive cruise control. With these, it is worth confirming that the work has been carried out. Also check the condition of the wheels and tyres, the operation of the air suspension at every ride height, and whether any of the electronic assistance systems throws up error messages. As this is a new generation, public information on servicing costs and intervals is still limited - clarify those with the dealer.
