Audi e-tron Sportback: what exactly is this car

The Audi e-tron was Audi's first series-production all-electric model, and it was offered with two body shapes: a conventional SUV, and the Sportback with its falling, coupe-like roofline. The 2022 e-tron Sportback 50 S-Line Black Edition in our range is that coupe-shaped version: 230 kW of power, electric drive, automatic transmission, all-wheel drive, five seats, five doors and white paint.

A 2022 car is still a pre-facelift machine. Production of the Sportback began in early 2020, the model was later facelifted and renamed the Q8 e-tron, and production ended by February 2025. Every drivetrain variant in this model family was an all-wheel-drive quattro.

The falling roofline is a deliberate styling decision on the Sportback, and it costs a small slice of boot space and rear headroom compared with the taller SUV body.

How this generation drives day to day

Owner feedback on this generation counts the smoothness of the drivetrain and the cabin's insulation from outside noise among its strengths. Access to the second row has been rated better than the class average, which makes sense given the large doors and high seating position. The weaker points raised are energy consumption and range, the voice commands, and places to put small items — this is first and foremost a comfortable long-distance car rather than a frugal one.

The e-tron and e-tron Sportback of this era generally came with adaptive air suspension, which gives a calm, stable feel on the open road and lets the ride height be altered when needed. Fast-charging behaviour is one of the model's clearest plus points: in ADAC measurements the e-tron held a high DC charging power even when the battery was already well filled, something many rivals manage far less convincingly. On a long drive, that means shorter stops.

Winter, heating and charging in Estonian conditions

The climate system on this model included a heat pump that makes use of waste heat from the drivetrain and energy from the outside air. Audi's engineers have described it as up to three times more efficient than purely electric resistance heating, and the system's four heat circuits provide enough warmth even at low outside temperatures. For Nordic markets, a second electric heater was available in the winter package — when looking at a used example, it is worth checking whether that particular car has it.

Cold reduces the battery's momentary output and slows charging, which is why the battery is warmed for charging — the most sensible approach is to do that while driving, shortly before reaching a fast charger. A home charging point lets you preheat the car, and by owners' experience this brings a noticeable gain on short trips in particular. Even so, in sub-zero temperatures you should expect real-world range to be roughly a fifth lower, as owners have described on forums. All-wheel drive and a heavy battery give a planted feel on slippery roads, though the final result still comes down to proper winter tyres.

What to check on a used Audi e-tron

An electric car's service list is shorter — there is no oil change, servicing happens once a year or at the manufacturer's stated interval, and it includes checks of the cooling system, drivetrain leaks and suspension components, an inspection of the locks and a test drive. Time-based work matters more here than mileage-based work.

• Have the VIN checked to confirm all recalls have been carried out. This model has been subject to a recall over the risk of high-voltage battery modules overheating (the remedy is monitoring software and, where needed, module replacement), and a separate recall for a failure of the infotainment head unit that left the reversing camera unusable.
• Ask for the complete service history. Reliability surveys have given this model uneven results: charging system faults, infotainment freezes and electrical system warning lights have all been highlighted.
• Check that the car sits evenly on all four corners in the morning — a typical air suspension problem is an air spring leak that lets one corner settle overnight. Knocking can come from the dampers as well as from cheaper anti-roll bar drop links.
• Look for traces of moisture: water leaks have been reported around the sunroof, the windscreen frame, the passenger footwell and the tailgate.
• Ask about the state of the 12-volt battery. A weak 12 V battery can prevent the high-voltage system from waking up, and the car will not begin charging.
• Brake fluid needs changing roughly every two years, and since regenerative braking leaves the hydraulic brakes idle much of the time, it is worth inspecting the discs and pads for corrosion.

Who this model suits

The Audi e-tron Sportback suits best the driver who covers a lot of main-road distance, values a quiet cabin and comfortable suspension, and wants fast-charging stops kept as short as possible. Five seats and all-wheel drive make it a workable family car. Anyone whose first priority is the lowest energy consumption or maximum boot space should consider either the taller body version or a smaller electric car.
